Kirk Sieder: JWT Advertising

Alumni Kirk Sieder will be visiting the last critique scheduled now for Tuesday December 6th to review your "Trevor Project and Stop Bullying" video assignment. Kirk is currently Creative Director at JWT/Retail First (Atlanta.) Kirk has also taught at GSU in the past and is familiar with the graphic design program and the strong work. He has also hired several of our graduating seniors who have gone on the work in the advertising business and motion design business (Brandy Porter who is now at Artifact for instance.) He's a true professional and a candid and insightful (and witty) friend and colleague of our program. I think he'll have some insights into your work.

(If you are thinking of getting into Advertising once you graduate you should discuss it with Kirk while he is in the studio with us. A great opportunity once again to have some one-on-one time with someone in the industry.)

One Account – Endless Opportunities
By Nancy Rabern, Business Development, Hire Profile, Inc.

This month I spoke to Kirk Sieder, Creative Director at JWT/RetailFirst who handles all the advertising for Ford in the southeast. I asked Kirk,
“How do you keep your creative team inspired when they are working on the same account week after week?”

Kirk pointed out that keeping his creative team inspired is not difficult. "They are a very talented and self-motivated bunch with different backgrounds and varying points of view. The real challenge is how to take a worldwide brand like Ford and make it entertaining, informative and culturally relevant on a regional level."

The strategy behind how they are achieving this is to continually tell the Ford story. While featuring different products in Ford's vast lineup, they focus on unique product features, attributes and claims that are targeted to a specific audience. By utilizing a full media landscape including broadcast, Web, interactive, print, sponsorships and social media, they provide a consistent brand message that focuses on quality, technology, safety and green – hybrids and top fuel economy.

It became apparent in my conversation with Kirk that working on the same account for a long period of time can be very rewarding. The creative team gets to know the products inside and out. Working closely with the client, they develop a deep and instinctive understanding of what product attributes are important, compelling and pertinent to consumers.

I was particularly fascinated by the challenge of sending the same sales message in two very different cities like Miami, Florida and Knoxville, Tennessee. As the cultures of these two markets differ significantly, it's important that the message be delivered in an authentic way that speaks to that particular audience. So while the message might be the same, the execution may be vastly different. For example, Kirk explained that in a city like Atlanta (watch TV spot) a football partnership might resonate with the audience, while in Miami (watch TV spot) the focus may be more on the many events, festivals, and social media opportunities.

The message has to be relevant to each market through each medium and it has to find a way to tell a piece of the Ford story that will make people listen and, hopefully, care. So even on one account, like Ford, there's no shortage of creative opportunities.

Lesson learned!

Final Promo/Video: Change in length (30sec-60sec)

Final Assignment:
Video and accompanying 12 x18 poster promo for your video/promo.

Individually create a video campaign/promo that you will eventually post to YouTube, Blog, Facebook and/or Vimeo for one of these two socially important organizations.

Both organizations are somewhat related in theme but I wanted to give you some leverage about how you wish to address your own creative voice regarding the two different topics.

The video you produce should be approximately 30seconds-1 minute in length and should be scripted, shot and edited by yourself. You can hire actors, hire musicians, use typography, animations, stop motion, or create all of it from your own point of view within the camera itself.

Our final critique will be one that reveals your video and accompanying poster that markets your video. Each of you will introduce your video and it should be accompanied with a film/video poster that might publicize your intention or story line. You should us whichever organizations logo on your poster as well.

The timely topics of bullying and teen suicide have affected each of us in some capacity. Either firsthand experience or as observer. As a storyteller you must convey your thoughts regarding the subject matter you so choose.

We'll discuss this in class with more depth.

How does teen suicide and bullying relate to you in your own life.
What are the stories you have to tell and what would be your affirmation regarding this seemingly controversial and escalating suicide for all teens, not just LGBT teens, and the youth of our nation.

Your videos can be interviews or purely fictional. It could be animation or shot entirely through the lens of a camera. It can have music, natural sound or complete silence. It's all up to you. Words are powerful and if your imagery connects to your words then it can be even more so powerful given your point of view. Remember that each of you have the ability to change someone's life with your point of view.
Do not hold back.

A 12 year old Red Sox fan, Sam Maden, reached out to the team to join him in standing up against the bullying of LGBT teens. The Red Sox happily accepted his invitation and I wrote, shot, directed, and edited this 60 second PSA for the "It Gets Better Campaign" and "The Trevor Project". It couldn't have been done without the help of Terry Francona, Kevin Youkilis, and Jason Varitek.

Ashlynn Conner Suicide: Family Says Bullying Was To Blame (VIDEO)

Courtesy Huffington Post

The family of a 10-year-old honor student who killed herself last week said the girl had struggled with bullying at both her school and in her community.

Ashlynn Conner, a student at Georgetown Ridge Farm Elementary School in Vermilion County in east central Illinois, told her mother two weeks before her death that she was being bullied, CBS Chicago reports.

Stacy Conner, the girl's mother, told WCIA-TV that students had been teasing her daughter for years.

"They'd call her a slut," she told the station. "Ashlynn's ugly. She's fat."

Though she realized her daughter was being bullied, she said she did not know how to respond. She hopes her coming forward with her daughter's story may help other families going through similar struggles.

"I thought my kids were strong," Connor said. "That my words to them for guidance and advice would have more weight than what these kids were saying. I was wrong."

Last Thursday, Ashlynn reportedly asked her mother if she could be home-schooled, CBS reports. The next day, Ashlynn was found by a sibling in a closet after she had hanged herself.

The Georgetown Ridge Farm School District issued a statement reporting that they were "very saddened at the tragic loss of one of our children. Our hearts go out to her family in this time of loss," WCIA-TV reports. Counselors will be available to speak with classmates and family members at her former school on Monday.

MyStateline reports that area police are currently investigating the bullying claims through email, Twitter and text messages.

FANTASTIC PRESENTATIONS AT MODA "World AIDS Day"

Once again each of you created work that was unique to your own point of view.
Amazing that each of you were able to present all that creative work in approximately 5 minute presentations. It meant that you knew your work very well and had given some thought to how you wanted to discuss it quickly.

Some highlights from your time there at MODA. There were some great surprises (some of the videos and some of the exterior interstitials) and each of you should be proud.
Of course in any type of presentation like this some of the campaigns were stronger than others (presentation/potential/missed opportunities/grammar) but as a collective group of designers it was not only memorable but inspiring at times.

A big shout out to Brenda Galina, Laura Flusche, and Katie Simms for supporting and embracing your work with such enthusiasm. We are very lucky to have worked with MODA for the past few years on various projects. They are such a great creative team and understand art and design and community. I hope you know just how lucky you are to work with them, plus, they are all just great people to be around.

Some uniquely beautiful printed invitations were created for the scheduled events.
Strong design, scale, organization of type and imagery was successful for the majority of you. Not surprising to me that some of the best work ever created (in my opinion) by several of you was demonstrated at this presentation. You know who you are.
The greatest gift any professor can have is to sit back and watch a gifted student finally reach their fullest potential in one breath taking moment during a presentation such as it was with MODA this past Thursday. I celebrate those individuals who realized their competitiveness and artistic voice as was demonstrated among your peers.

*if any of you would like for me to remove any of these images just let me know and I will oblige.

I hope each of you will one day look back on this semester and know how fortunate you were to participate with both HLN and MODA. Not to be taken lightly as you begin to realize that your work is "bigger" than yourself, your studio and your own world.
Congrats for all the dedicated work you've put forth so far.
A word to the wise to all of you as you enter your final semester in the Graphic Design program and your BFA Degree: Each of you still have a long way to go so don't get overly confident that the hard work is already done...it isn't. Actually it's just beginning as you prepare yourself and your work for the professional world.
You're only as great as your weakest work.
